On Tuesday evening Piers Morgan welcomed “The 5 Browns,” inviting the brother and sister musical quintet to join him in studio for an emotional and revealing interview.
A classical piano ensemble, the siblings each attended New York’s Juilliard School, and are soon to release their sixth album, “The Rite of Spring.”
However, amidst all their success and acclaim, the group has dealt with its share of demons, as it was revealed that all three of the girls have been sexually abused by their father:
“The moment I realized that my sisters had been abused and it wasn’t just me it was probably the worst moment of my life. I remember feeling sick to my stomach,” explained Desirae Brown. “At the same time there was like a camaraderie, almost like we understood each other, like a kinship there, that we could get through this together.”
None of “The 5 Browns” have any contact with their father – Keith Brown – who’s currently in prison. Though the girls experiences may be sadly similar, they each favor a different type of healing process:
“Time is so important. I’ve had a couple of years now to sort of deal with it all, and process it. We’ve been through counseling as a family. And I just feel like finally I am able to heal with that time,” said Melody Brown. “My sisters have chosen to start a foundation, and that’s empowering for them. But for me, I’ve chosen to just live my own life and heal in my own time and be with my husband out in nature. Those are the things that heal me.”
For Deondra Brown, the actions of the family’s father have had an impact that’s last far longer than the abuse itself:
“It’s difficult over the years, because based off the decisions that he made, it directly influences the rest of your life. There are forever consequences to the decisions that he made,” she told the “Piers Morgan Live” host. “I choose to try to focus on my life, my husband, my daughter, and the happy things. Playing music together as brothers and sisters, touring the world. Those are the things that make me happy.”
